Introduction

The term America, for the lands of the western hemisphere, is believed to have been coined in 1507 after Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer and cartographer. The full name of the country was first used officially in the Declaration of Independence, which
was the "unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America" adopted by "Representatives of the united States of America" on July 4, 1776.

New York

The City of New York is a city in the southern end of the state of New York and the most populous city in the United States of America. New York City is a global economic center, with its business, finance, trading, law, and media organizations having worldwide influence. The city is also an important cultural center, with many museums, galleries, and performance venues. As the home of the United Nations, the city is a hub for international diplomacy. The current mayor is Michael Bloomberg.

San Francisco

Much has been written about the Bay Area. From its seafood and sourdough breads to Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco is the ideal city for visitors. Trolleys and prominent landmarks make getting around this eclectic metropolis easy. One of the best views in town can be had from the Coit Tower, one of the most prominent landmarks in the city and a fine example of Art Deco architecture.

Las Vegas

The center of gambling in the United States, Las Vegas is marketed as The Entertainment Capital of the World and is famous for its massive, lavish casino resorts. It is also commonly known as Sin City, due to the popularity of legalized gambling, availability of alcoholic beverages at any time (as is true throughout Nevada), and various forms and degrees of adult entertainment.

Seattle

The Emerald City combines spectacular natural beauty and cosmopolitan flair like few places can. An outdoor and coffee mecca, Seattle also offers up some of the best seafood anywhere along the Pacific Rim. Named after the great chief of the Suquamish Indians, Seattle enjoys a fusion of American, Asian and Native American cultures you won't likely find anywhere else.

Houston

Houston was founded on August 30, 1836 by brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen on land near the banks of Buffalo Bayou. The city was incorporated on June 5, 1837 and named after General Sam Houston, commander at the Battle of San Jacinto.

San Antonio

Famous for its River Walk, the Alamo, Tejano culture, and being home to SeaWorld and Six Flags Fiesta Texas theme parks, the city is visited by 20 million tourists per year. San Antonio is also home to the first museum of modern art in Texas the Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum, as well as one of the most successful National Basketball Association teams in the past decade, the San Antonio Spurs.

Austin

Residents of Austin are known as "Austinites" and include a mix of university professors, lobbyists, musicians, etc. In recent years, many Austinites have also adopted the unofficial slogan "Keep Austin Weird"; this refers partly to the eclectic and progressive lifestyle of many Austin residents, but is also the slogan for a campaign to preserve smaller local businesses & resist excessive commercialization.

Portland

Portland started as a spot known as "the clearing", which was on the banks of the Willamette about halfway between Oregon City and Fort Vancouver. In 1843, William Overton saw great commercial potential for this land, but lacked the funds required to file a land claim.

Sacramento

Sacramento is the capital of the State of California and the county seat of Sacramento County. Located in California's expansive Central Valley, it is the seventh most populous city in California.
